Your ability to chew and clarity of speech can be seriously compromised by multiple missing teeth in one area of your mouth. In some cases, a partial can restore lost function and appearance. Essentially, a partial is just a smaller form of dentures, that is custom crafted to lock into place.
At the initial consultation your dentist will inspect your mouth and take a few X-rays to assess the strength of the surrounding teeth. If they find additional teeth that are compromised or a significant lost bone structure in the jaw, then you might need additional extractions or a bone graft before they can proceed with fitting you for a partial.
Your dentist will then create an impression of the surrounding teeth and your bite pattern. This is sent to a dental lab, where your new partial is created.
Denture adhesive is popular with people who have a partial because it helps hold it in place and also can serve to block out food particles. If you do opt to use denture adhesive, you will need to make sure you rinse all of it away when each night.
